Amaretti Italian macaroons
Amaretti cookies are Italian macaroons made with almonds. These round cookies are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. There is both a hard, crunchy variant and a somewhat softer, chewier cookie. The amaretti in our range are of the dry, crunchy type.
Amaretti literally means ‘the little bitter’ in Italian. After one bite of this cookie it is clear where that name comes from. The cookies were originally made with bitter almonds, but today almond extract is also used. The result is the same: a particularly tasty and world-famous macaroon.
Italian almond cookies are baked at a low temperature. This gives them a nice crispy crust, but the inside remains creamy. These amaretti secchi , the dry variety, are baked a little longer and therefore a bit firmer.
With coffee or dessert
Amaretti cookies have such a distinct taste that they don’t need much else. One or two of these simple cookies with coffee are probably enough as a nice sweet snack.
